Fixing a Hacked Site

Your phone rings. A client informs you that a WordPress site YOU developed and maintain for them has been hacked.

• Where do you begin?

• What do you do?

• How will you prevent it from happening again?

Speaker

Seth Alling is a developer turned designer turned developer, who has been working with WordPress since 2009 and currently works as the Lead Developer for Ranch House Designs.

When he’s not developing (or designing), you can find him running, playing soccer or spending time with his wife and sons.

We need volunteers... for photography, taking/publishing notes on our blog, greeting people when they arrive, setting up, and tweeting.

If you would like to volunteer to help with this, or any meetup, just let the host of the meetup know. You will get in free for the meetup you help at when you volunteer, we appreciate the help!

Parking and Venue information

Grand Circus is located in the Broderick Tower, and you enter from the Woodward-facing doors.

Once inside, go to the end of the hall, and take the elevator to the third floor. Turn left when you get off the elevator, then turn right and look for the signs directing you to the room.

Parking is available at the Detroit Opera House parking garage, located on Broadway. Parking is $10 (unless there's a special event). There's also limited paid street parking on the streets.

The Detroit Opera House parking garage is a short walk up Broadway and around the corner from the Grand Circus space. Here's parking information from the Broderick Tower website (PDF)

Note: with the M-1 rail construction downtown, it will be challenging to maneuver downtown streets and find street parking. Stay current on the construction by visiting the M-1 construction page

Please note that if there are less than 10 people registered, we'll cancel event and notify everyone by Sunday before meetup.

Thanks to Christine Zheng for sharing her notes from Seth's presentation with us. I've published the notes, with some of Larisa's great photos, on our meetup blog. https://metrodetroitwp.wordpress.com/2016/05/01/takeaways-from-fixing-a-hacked-site/

Seth what FTP client do you use, I meant to ask?

have you ever used the realtime sync function in Forklift? I have been using https://www.syncovery.... for about 8 years and am always happy when I can consolidate things.

I haven't. I can see how it may be useful, but it's not for me. We have hundreds of sites, and there's too much room for an accidental push to live with that. Sometimes, I don't want to have the client see exactly what I've done until I'm ready, so realtime doesn't sound like something I'd want. I also can push my changes to either a staging or live site, so I've got a lot of flexibility without requiring much on my part.

Nodding as I listened to the stories of hacked sites, I've had to deal with several this year. Lots of useful information from Seth on how to handle hacked sites, what to look for, and how to prevent it from happening again. Great discussion afterwards!

Great presentation. Thank you. Chatter command is 'chattr'. It locks/unlocks files from any changes including deleting files, changing permissions, changing permissions. As with anything - test, test, test, and test even more.

On mobile, right? Did you try desktop? Unfortunately, registering with mobile on Meetup seems to be problematic for some people.

With this new phone a lot of things are problematic more than on my old one...
