Pop stars like Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, and Janelle Monáe are getting involved in politics and inspiring millions. But can they also decide elections? In this multimedia lecture, cultural journalist Vanessa Schneider explores how mainstream pop became political, the role musicians play in election campaigns, and the limits of their activism. She explores protest anthems, social media campaigns, and the question of whether their engagement is motivated by conviction or also serves economic interests.

Vanessa Schneider is a multimedia journalist and presenter for public broadcasting. After completing her bachelor's degree in American Studies and History and her master's degree in Popular Music and Media at the University of Paderborn, she completed a journalistic internship at the Electronic Media School in Babelsberg. Her main interests are US cultural history and pop culture, as well as storytelling podcasts. She is currently an editor in the BR StoryTeam for the podcast Wild Wild Web.
