10-mile hike from Hassocks to Brighton. The route starts on a railway path towards Clayton, before taking on a very steep climb up the South Downs and then following open chalky paths towards Brighton. We will have a lunch stop on the way, at a Bronze-Age bowl barrow in Pudding Bag Wood. The route then descends rapidly into Moulsecoomb for the final stretch into Brighton.
Please bring a packed lunch.
We pass the two ancient parishes on the way, namely Clayton and Keymer; records of these go back to the Domesday Book.
Take care on the rougher sections, especially if conditions are wet, and along the roads. Appropriate footwear is essential. Dogs welcome!
There will be an arts festival /artists' open house in Brighton at the finish, in case it is of interest.
