Metrotrails 29 Year Anniversary Hike: Warren County!
Details
Join us for our annual hike in Warren County, marking 29 years since we began doing these hikes.
I was still in high school for the first one, and we always did the old Warren Railroad.
Over the years, some properties became inaccessible, unsafe, or badly overgrown forcing us to change the route we take. In some ways, it's a good thing to cover some new ground, and in others we miss some places we love.
This time, we'll be following some of the things we've done as well as some new stuff we've never incorporated into this hike previously.
We'll meet before 9 at the Port Colden Mall, and then shuttle with as few vehicles as possible to our start point.
This time, we'll be out in the Pequest area for the beginning.
Several field trails make for a very pleasant way of starting.
We'll make our way casually through all of these woods, and then come to a short road walk in Townsbury to the Lehigh and Hudson River Railway grade.
We'll follow the L&HR west through Pequest and Buttzville, then make our way on road briefly to Hot Dog Johnny's for a probably late lunch.
Once finished at Johnny's, we'll head up to the old Lackawanna/Warren Railroad in the way we always walk back to Oxford.
When we get to Oxford, we'll make refreshment stops, and then head to the south. Rather than stay on the overgrown railroad bed, we'll likely follow some back roads including Tunnel Hill Road through farm land where we'll see some different railroad remnants, then Jackson Valley Road back to 31. We'll finish our evening at the newly reopened Draught House to conclude the evening.
