Join us for this 15 mile loop hike along the Pompton River Watershed and featuring long stretches of the Morris Canal and its Pompton Feeder, as well as the former Greenwood Lake Branch of the Erie Railroad. As such, this hike fits into our Passaic Watershed series, our Greenwood Lake Branch series, as well as a return to the Morris Canal series because new segments have been improved.
NOTE: Wolfson's Market is right across from the parking. Good for buying supplies or as a guide for where to go.
After meeting at Aqueduct Park, we'll walk a little over two miles on back streets to the south along the Pompton River to where we left off at the old Twin Bridges. From there, we walk a short distance to the Morris Canal Greenway.
We'll follow the main canal to the Pompton Feeder Canal, and begin following that north.
Most of this is a grassy trail, a very pleasant walk along the Pompton River and through little neighborhoods.
We'll continue up the Pompton Feeder to Pompton Plains Crossroad where we'll head west a bit, past the Stop and Shop, to the Greenwood Lake Branch of the Erie Railroad, now a new rail trail.
We'll follow the rail bed just about back to the beginning.
This should be a very pleasant hike with only minimal roads and a lot of nice easy walkway.
