Crock of Pequannock Hike
Details
Join us for this next hike in our Passaic Watershed series, this time continuing up the Pequannock and Ramapo Rivers from where we last left off in Pompton Plains!
We'll meet at 9 am at Plaza 23, which has the Stop and Shop and Buy Rite Liquors closer to Jackson Avenue.
This is a 15 mile loop, so we'll begin right there, and make our way along Jackson to the former Morris Canal crossing. If anyone wants to go and see the old Pompton Lock, many can do this and hike through while I'll head with the stroller on parallel roads out and around Riverview Farm.
We will follow several pleasant back roads and streets to the north, visit the historic Schuyler-Colfax House, and see the Pompton Lake Dam.
From there we will had south on more of the Morris Canal Greenway, which was where it followed the slackwater of the river.
We'll pass through Mathes Avenue Woodlands, and several other properties to Ventimiglia tracts, then to Willow Field.
We get back on street a short bit, then back to Hershfield Park where we'll do a little loop.
We'll make our way toward Pompton Junction before turning back tracing the former Greenwood Lake Branch of the Erie Railroad again.
Most of this is active, so we'll be on closely parallel stuff on this part.
Toward the end, it becomes the rail trail again which we'll follow to where we left off, then back to the plaza to close the loop.
