Although many member of the MHAA will be out of the area experiencing the TOTALITY of the Great American Eclipse of 2017, anyone wishing to share the viewing of the partial eclipse which will occur in our area may join Raj Pandya of the Department of Astronomy at SUNY New Paltz for a viewing and presentation.

The much anticipated eclipse of the Sun, that people are calling “The Great American Eclipse,” will take place on Monday August 21st from 1:22-3:58pm local time.

While we won’t see the total eclipse in this location, we will still be able to see it partially, with the Moon blocking about 75% of the Sun’s disk at 2:34pm. Totality is visible on a curved line stretching from Oregon to South Carolina. If you are not planning on traveling, I would like to invite to you witness the natural phenomenon here at New Paltz!

Along with members of the Mid-Hudson Astronomical Association, the Physics and Astronomy Department will set up telescopes with solar filters and solar glasses so you can safely view the eclipse. Do NOT look directly at the Sun at any time as that will be damaging to your eyes. Additionally, if you bring your own shoe box you can learn how to make a pin-hole camera to project the image of the eclipse.

Weather pending, we will start viewing at 1PM until the eclipse is over at 4PM on the Excelsior Concourse (between LC and CSB).
