Kayak Camping at Kensington Metropark and Island Lake
Hosted by Michigan Adventurers Club
Details
The Plan
We'll be kayaking from Heavner's at Proud Lake to camp at Kensington Metropark Fri 09/19, then to Island
Lake's canoe camp 09/20, then to a pickup location the afternoon of 09/21. The RSVP will be limited to 10 people. We'll be able to rent
kayaks for the weekend or you can bring your own. At the end of the voyage we will be driven back, with kayaks, to the start where we will
be allowed to leave our cars for the weekend. I plan to do the kayaking piece relatively soon myself so I can verify travel times, see the
sites, and provide first hand knowledge.
Daily Itinerary
Fri 09/19 - Arrive at Heavner's at 5:00 pm. We'll meet, greet, and eat. We'll get in the water by 5 pm. We will be allowed to leave our vehicles here for the weekend. We will kayak to Kensington Metropark's canoe campground (site 3), approx 2.5 hours travel. Setup camp and have fun.
Sat 09/20 - Hike planned at 11 am. After lunch, break camp we'll kayak to Island Lake campsites. Approx
2.5 hours kayaking. Everyone sets up camp again and relaxes.
Sun 09/21 - Hike planned after breakfast. Be in the water at 1 pm. Kayak to pickup near State Rd in Island Lake rec, approx 30min. We'll
go somewhere for lunch afterwards and everyone goes home full.
Details
-I've been in contact with Alan Heavner about the kayak rentals, parking, and transportation. We will be able to leave our vehicles at Heavner's in Proud Lake. Each kayak rental for the weekend will be $100 and transportation back to Proud Lake another $20. You will have to tell me if you are renting a kayak from Heavner's in the questionnaire following your RSVP. I will tell Heavner's how many kayaks we are renting and you'll pay them when arriving on 09/19.
-Kensington's canoe campsite is $5 per kayak. Island Lake's canoe campsites are $4 per person if 10 people RSVP. I'll make the RSVP fee for the hike $9 to cover the campsites. Then I'll require details from each RSVP'er if they plan to rent from Heavner's and pass that information to them.
-Campsites are rustic. There will be outhouses and wells.
-I'm not planning on staging vehicles near the campgrounds.
-Everything you need should be carried with you. I think we know what this is by now. Plan on two breakfasts, two lunches, a dinner, and
snacks.
-Pack your gear around the fact you will be sharing a kayak with it. I think dry sacks will work best.
