Colvin Run/W&OD Trail/Difficult Run Trail: A Moderate 10.7-Mile Hike
Details
From Colvin Run Mill to the W&OD Trail to the Cross County Trail Along Difficult Run: A Moderate 10.7-Mile Hike
"This triangle-shaped circuit connects trails in Colvin Run and Difficult Run stream valleys via W&OD Regional Park. It begins with a downhill stroll through the grounds of Colvin Run Mill Park, past nicely preserved and restored mill facilities, to VA 7. After crossing VA 7, the hike takes Colvin Run Trail to the southwest end of Lake Fairfax Park, follows Washington & Old Dominion (W&OD) rail-trails back to Difficult Run, and closes the circuit on the Cross County Trail.

"Most terrain on this moderately difficult hike is gently rolling or nearly flat. The surfaces vary from dirt to gravel to asphalt. Most of the asphalt is on the W&OD rail trail, and it can be avoided by taking parallel bridle trails. The closing lap on the Cross County Trail parallels the northbound flow of Difficult Run, with a couple of 'fair weather' stream crossings (usually dry but problematic after heavy rain) and some slippery footing along the floodplain."
