Circumstances have prevailed to delay my departure from humid, sweltering, miserable Florida. I am soooo tired of "feels like 102 degrees" days. We are now achieving escape velocity for our first paddle of the summer on July 18th. My chiropractor, my nutritionist, and my psychiatrist are almost all packed. So here we come!
As Henry David Thoreau said, "Get your sorry butt to Maine before you melt on some Florida sidewalk."
I've waited nine long months for this.
Our Megunticook outing is a 3+ hour fairly easy paddle for intermediate paddlers, no beginners. Kayaks at least 10 feet long are best for this.
We paddle at a moderate pace around the shore, taking in the sights.
Arrive at 9 am at BARRETT'S COVE, we will launch at 9:30. They have plenty of parking and decent Porta Potties there.
For the record, I generally prefer paddling interesting streams or sea kayaking. There are exceptions. For this trip we will be exploring beautiful Megunticook Lake and its islands. Plus, if the water level permits, we'll go ashore at Fernald's Neck Cove to see Balancing Rock. At least it was still balanced when I left last October.
Bring a hat, water and a snack. Make sure you have your PFD (and a whistle). We wear them on Paddlers and Pathfinders kayak events.
After the paddle those who care to will gather at Seadog in Camden for lunch.
If you're not feeling at the top of your game, please do not sign up for this outing. Covid is not finished with us yet.
