Back yard flocks bring us endless delight and fully sustainable egg self sufficiency! A healthy flock does require attention and dedication but at the same time their rising at dawn and retiring at dusk reminds us to work with the natural cycles.
During our program we will explore all things chicken. How do they stay healthy? What do you do with the boys when 52% of all chicks born are roosters! When most chicken people use incubators to bring chicks into the world, I prefer the natural way of Mother Hen becoming broody and then setting for 21 dedicated days before the chicks start “pipping” and they emerge triumphant into the world. All this high drama in my back yard and chicken coop!
Although we can gather a lot of information from books, other keepers and on-line, it is actually the birds themselves that are the wisdom keepers. They teach me what they need and through observation and communion we live in harmony.
As my first chicken teacher Pat Foreman used to say, “May the flock be with you!”
