Shelby Bottoms Park is a premier birding destination in Nashville, featuring diverse habitats like bottomland forests, wetlands, and open fields, which attract a wide array of species, especially during spring and fall migrations. Known as an Audubon Society Important Bird Area, the park is ideal for spotting migratory neotropical birds, waterfowl, and resident species like various sparrows and warblers.
You never know what you’ll see and hear on the trails and boardwalks at Shelby, but we stand a better chance in the company of wildlife biologist Melinda Welton.
Melinda has been involved in bird conservation since overseeing the reintroduction of bald eagles and peregrine falcons in North Carolina in the 1980s. Her work has taken her from the mountains of Northeast Tennessee to Central America, identifying lands essential to bird migration. The cerulean warbler has inspired much of her work. Currently she is a board member of TennGreen Land Conservancy, co-chair of the Conservation Committee for the Tennessee Ornithological Society, co-founder of Bird Safe Nashville, and she serves on the Purple Martin Task Force.
This outing benefits the Middle Tennessee Group of the Sierra Club and its work to preserve and protect Middle Tennessee. Cost for registration includes a tailgate with coffee, fruit juice and brunch treats after the walk. Adults age 18 and up $20; quiet teenagers age 12 and up $10. Please bring cash or check. Meetup will be in Shelby Bottoms Park Nature Center parking lot.
