Morgan Creek - 12 miles + 1,000 rock steps

Details
Total elevation is expected to be 2,200 ft.
We're excited to hike this new section of the Cumberland Trail, which will take us to Laurel Snow State Natural Area, known for its magnificent rock features, waterfalls, gorges, and diverse forest ecosystems. We will cross 3 bridges, including a triple-span bridge (150 ft. long). Keep in mind the waterfalls will likely be dried up right now.
We will start at Hwy 30, where we will ascend alongside Green Sally Falls (18 ft). The trail takes us to 2 overlooks with views of Buzzard's Point. It will then descend 1,000 rock steps (a testament to the CT trail building crew), where we will pass a moonshine still, briefly visit several coal mine shafts (bring a headlamp if you have one), finally cross the big shiny new aluminum Morgan Creek Bridge. Soon after we will enter the already existing Laurel Snow trails. Here we will visit Buzzard Point, Snow Falls (35 ft) , Laurel Falls (80 ft), and the Old Dayton Reservoir. The final stretch will return us to parking lot.
We plan to stay together as a group. We will take an ample number of water/snack breaks as well as a lunch break. Please bring 2-3 liters of water along with lunch and snacks.
- Pets on a leash are allowed and must be able to keep up with the group.
- Bring plenty of water! Sunscreen is recommended (trail is mostly shaded). And bug/tick spray!
- Bring a headlamp (optional)
