Pine Valley Peak View Ramble

Details

Are you sick and tired of the heat? Come explore with us! Keep cool in the early morning and come see the fantastic views from Pine Valley Peak in West Zion up Kolob Reservoir Rd. This is a great hike for strong beginners! Less than 3 miles, under 600 feet of climbing--Slopes that are not too steep, but somewhat challenging, and awesome views. That said, the main climb is fairly steep so you will need some leg strength to do it right.

Rating:
Less than 3 miles and 600 feet of climbing. Easy to moderate, somewhat strenuous on the main climb up the shoulder of the peak where its solid rock and good footing, but mostly flat walking going and coming.

Zion backcountry limit: 12 hikers. Because this group is sharing with Red Rock Hiking on this hike, we've split the 12 hiker Zion limit into 6 for each group.

First, it's easy and downhill then we go across a little woodland and finally steeply up onto a beautiful white sandstone shoulder jetting out from Pine Valley Peak. After we're done looking at the view we'll come back down and explore some nearby red sandstone hoodoos, and possibly go over to an old sawmill in the area. There will be time for extracurricular scrambling and exploring.

Returning from the hike, there is a 200 foot climb near the end but it's not too steep and it'll be good for training! Hosted by John Gallant and Meredith Bowman, we'll take time to enjoy the rising sun and enchanting Zion landscapes in the morning light and coolness of the higher altitudes, 7,000ft, in West Zion starting from Wildcat Trailhead soon after dawn.

We'll be done hiking way before the heat moves in which will give us time for some sightseeing in the area, if we so choose, perhaps Lava Point and Kolob Reservoir.

Bring plenty of water with electrolytes and energy snacks. Hat, poles, protective desert garb with light layers, and grippy, flexible hiking shoes, and camera. A cooler waiting in the car with additional drinks and snacks is also a great idea.
