Rating:
3 miles, about 600 feet total climbing. Very rough and steep in places. Good agility, poise, and stamina are needed. If you have that, and you're not afraid of a little height, you should be okay.

This hike is in conjunction with Red Rock Hiking.

This hike is on Yant Flat's west side, where it's not so easy as in the main color bowl section.

It starts from the main dirt road with an easy warm-up through the woods, quickly reaching large expanses of white sandstone overlooking mighty Cottonwood Canyon.

We will visit an impressive vertical-sided ravine, traveling right along its edge. Following that, we descend through various sandstone bowls and so forth. Lots of fun.

Then we drop a couple hundred feet down into a very pretty side canyon to the very bottom. This dissent is a little sketchy in places. Good scramblers should have no problem with it, but beginners could be challenged, so there will be a hand line for extra safety.

We have to get up and out somehow, and luckily there is a steep climb up a "secret" escape route, composed entirely of smooth, white sandstone. It's awesome.

Finally, we walk 1/2 mile through the woods and back to the main dirt road, easy peezy.

----

In short, the hike has a lot of adventure and excitement packed into just a few miles. If you want to experience beautiful cross-country hiking, that's a little on the difficult side, this one is for you.

----

The Drive: From the start of Silver Reef Road it's 14 good graveled miles to the trailhead. Any dirt capable car will do. There is a 1 mile car shuttle along the main dirt road to eliminate that boring distance.

Prep: 1 bottle of water, some food, camera. Leather gloves.

See you there! M+J :)
