We'll discuss koans from the Book of Householder Koans: Waking Up in the Land of Attachments, compiled by 2 students of Maezumi Roshi, founder of the White Plum Asangha: Eve Myonen Marko & Wendy Egyoku Nakao, 3d Abbot of the Los Angeles Zen Center he founded for the new lineage.
Koans are not puzzles or riddles, let alone brainteasers. As Roshis Eve & Wendy stress in the introduction & in classic Zen Master questions throughout, koans are very much an embodied practice. We sit with them. We feel them. Where? Are they us? They defeat the "discriminating mind." There are many Zen terms which can be thrown out here. "interbeing," "nonduality," "no distance." We cannot discuss every koan in the book, & the group will exercise choice.
Koans do not have to be medieval Japanese. We American & western European Zen practitioners complain & exclaim plenty to generate fresh ones. ("Householders" are those adherents who are not enrobed in temples but navigating the confusion of daily life.) The 2 fierce Roshis of the White Plum lineage respond in the classically demanding Zen fashion: asking more questions. The book has sections which appropriately intermingle with each other: home, children, work, illness age & death, & The Many Gates of Practice.
We will use as our guides in practice with each other Thich Nhat Hanh's 4th Mindfulness Training Mindful Speech & Deep Listening, a source for many Zen Peacemakers Council Practices.
