Description of the discussion
Inside every department of every company, there is a Community of Practice just sitting there; waiting to find itself.

They may exist for you already – you might call them Guilds, Tribes, Gatherings or Roundups – anywhere that a group of people with shared ideas and interests can come together and grow together has the potential to become a successful Community of Practice.

And communities need leaders.

I would like to share with you my experiences of trying, failing, and trying again to help build successful communities, the difference they can make to your test team, the ever changing role of the leader, and discuss the importance of balancing passion and leadership to ensure others get the chance to grow.

About our speaker:
Drew Pontikis

My job is to make sure that our Testing Community of Practice has everything it needs to succeed. That might be either offering workshops or knowledge sharing sessions, or it might be facilitating an agenda of sessions provided by members within the community. It might be identifying new ways that we can expand the scope of our testing, or it might be supporting someone to either succeed with or fail fast and learn something from an experimental new approach. I might be learning a new technique, or I might be sharing it with people or teams who might benefit from hearing about it. It could be as complex as coaching to enhance performance, or it could be as simple introducing two people to make a new connection. I could be working with Test Engineers in Cambridge UK, in Katowice Poland, our latest cohort of Graduate Engineers, or with our recruitment team working to find the best people possible to join our team.

Above all else, easily the most important part of my job is to know when I should be involved in a project or experiment to help those working on it have the best chance of success, and to know when its time to get out of the way and let them be a success on their own
