Hallowe'en is back! This year, iconic haunted house movies from the 1970s.

We're going to compress Hallowe'en a little this year, and only take two weeks. But let's watch four movies anyway. So for this week, let's watch THE SENTINEL and THE ENTITY.

(The Sentinel is available all over the place; The Entity you'll have to watch with the above link.)

These movies are both so great. THE ENTITY is easily the most underrated horror movie of the '70s/'80s. (It's really 1982, but that's close enough.) It's also easily one of the most controversial. It generated a ton of controversy even among feminist groups. Is it an allegory and metaphor for living under the patriarchy, an explicit portrayal of how women's trauma is often dismissed by authorities? Or is it exploitative of that trauma? Or how about this--is the exploitative cinematic eye itself the unseen force using female bodies for its own pleasure? This movie is clinical, cerebral, visceral, scary, and unsettling all at the same time.

THE SENTINEL (1977) is another under-appreciated classic. You've never seen so many naked old people in your life. This movie has a huge cast of amazing actors, both young actors in their earliest roles, and old actors from the golden age of Hollywood. TV Guide called this movie "a truly repulsive film," and if that's not enough to convince you it's a must-see, then this isn't the movie group for you! After seeing this film, then the next time you go to New York, go to the south end of the Brooklyn Promenade, and I guarantee you you'll exclaim, "oh shit, there's the sentinel house!"

As always, a free link to the movie is available on the website, https://gregoryberry.net/halloween2025 (still down!)

We will meet on Friday, October 17, 2025, at 8PM, at LEANING TOWER PIZZA at 24th Street and Lyndale, same as always. See you there!
