Annual Meeting & Lecture: Beautiful Ohio: Sedimentary Dreams (in-person only)

Details

Time for the start of the 2025-26 GSM lecture season: Monday, Sept 15 at 6:30 PM in Keller Hall, Room 3-230.

Unfortunately, due to the closing of U Garden, we won't have a banquet this fall, but we are starting a half hour early because Joe Wright is treating us to cake and bottled water prior to the Annual Meeting, which starts at 7:00 PM. Thanks, Joe!

Our Annual Meeting's one order of business is election of new GSM Board members. Of the nine current members, three (Dave Kelso, Roger Benepe, and Deborah Naffziger) will be leaving the Board at the end of 2025, as they have served the maximum of 2 consecutive 2-years terms, that is, 4 years. Two other Board members (Lowell Hill and Dave Wilhelm) are up for re-election to a second 2-year term and have both agreed to run again. Finally, three other GSM members (Wolfgang Bielefeld, Javier Guzman, and Mary Helen Inskeep) have said they are interested in serving on the Board.

Our first lecture immediately follows the Annual Meeting:

Presenter: Deborah Naffziger, Geological Society of Minnesota

Full Title: Beautiful Ohio: Sedimentary Dreams – A Virtual Field Trip

Summary: Beautiful Ohio: Sedimentary Dreams is a virtual field trip to Ohio. I tried organizing a real field trip, Covid got in the way, and so I am presenting it virtually. Also includes a show-and-tell of various items from some sites.

Biography: Deborah Naffziger has a BA in Speech Communication from the University of Minnesota, and a First Class Radiotelephone License from the FCC. Not that it means anything for this lecture. I worked for 33+ years at WCCO-TV as an Engineer, putting TV in your sets in various ways. I took many geology courses at the U, but stopped after the Arab Oil Embargo, because I was not interested in oil exploration. Otherwise I just love geology and keep studying and learning.

General Info: GSM lectures/seminars with slide show presentations are free and open to the public. They are presented by leading professionals in their fields and are aimed at learners from high school to adult. A question-and-answer session follows each seminar. In-person lectures require no registration; just show up a few minutes early on the evening of the lecture. These lectures are eligible for 1 hour of Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credit.

Except as noted (such as this event's early start), in-person lectures during the fall 2025 semester are Mondays at 7:00 PM CT on the University of Minnesota campus, Keller Hall, Room 3-230.

Our full schedule of lectures and labs is posted at Current Year Lectures, and a printable (PDF) version is posted here. Our schedule is planned over 6 months in advance, so changes may occur; always check our home page shortly before each lecture for the latest seminar information.

Winter weather will come and snow might impact our lectures. The GSM will make any decision about cancelling or postponing a lecture due to inclement weather no later than 3:00 PM the day of the lecture. This information will be posted on the GSM home page, so check that page shortly before each lecture in case there is a cancellation or a last-minute change. Also, we will e‐mail lecture postponement and cancellation information to our dues-paying members.
