We'll meet Milly Theale, a young American in Europe, rich and radiant and running out of time, and the people whose lives she will change forever. Around her orbit Kate Croy, brilliant and beautiful but boxed in by poverty, and Merton Densher, the man they both love.

James published this in 1902, and his own brother William wrote to him that he read many pages "twice over to see what the dickens they could possibly mean"... but finished with unflagging curiosity to know how it all turned out. We're in good company.

It's a story about what people do when love and money and desperation all collide. I have a feeling we're going to have a lot of thoughts about it!
