Movie Club: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)
Details
With pick #34 on the Top 100, we travel back to 1937 and to something that had genuinely never existed before in America: a feature-length animated film. Walt Disney's gamble was so widely doubted that Hollywood called it "Disney's Folly."
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is the story we all think we know: a princess, a wicked queen, a poisoned apple, a glass coffin. But people who've revisited it are often surprised by how strange and dark it still feels — how genuinely menacing the Queen is, how much the film's roots in Grimm fairy tale show through.
There's also pure delight in it, by all accounts. The dwarfs are fully realized comic characters. The music is woven into the story in ways that still feel alive. And the animation — hand-drawn, painstaking, revolutionary — is said to hold up in ways worth slowing down to notice.
At just 83 minutes, it's one of the shorter picks on our list, an easy one to fit in before we meet!
