Album Club: Dr. Dre, The Chronic (1992)
Details
Coming in at #37 on the Top 100 is Dr. Dre's The Chronic, the album that gave hip-hop a whole new sound and made the West Coast the center of the rap universe almost overnight.
Released in 1992, this was Dre's first solo record after leaving the legendary group N.W.A, and he used it to invent something called G-funk: slow, rolling grooves built on deep bass, whining synthesizers, and samples of 1970s funk (think Parliament-Funkadelic).
It's also the album that introduced the world to a then-unknown 21-year-old named Snoop Doggy Dogg, whose laid-back drawl floats over nearly every track.
We'll chat about:
-
The push and pull between the breezy, feel-good music and the raw, unflinching lyrics
-
Snoop's arrival on the scene!
-
How the explicit language and attitudes hit today
Spend some time with it, notice what grabs you, and bring your thoughts.
Hope to see you there!
Peace ❤️
