Movie Club: The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957)
Details
We're up to #36 on the Top 100!
Director David Lean's epic film swept seven Academy Awards and still unsettles its viewers because, while it seems like a war movie, the real conflict is psychological.
It's 1943, World War II, and British prisoners of war are being held in a Japanese camp in the jungles of Southeast Asia, ordered to build a railway bridge for their captors. What unfolds is a standoff between two commanders that has more to do with pride than with weapons. Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness) and Colonel Saito (Sessue Hayakawa) are each locked inside their own code of honor. William Holden plays an American with no patience for any of it.
Two men certain they're the reasonable one, and a third who thinks they're both mad.
