Miton AI Times, Coding Assistants

In GLAMI we spent part of our summer testing and evaluating different coding assistants mainly for PHP and Python. We did so with various IDE plugins and different models like Codeium, Copilot and many others. This includes a model from Codeium which was fine-tuned on our own repositories on top of what is publicly accessible. We would like to share with you our findings about the strengths, weaknesses and surprises of the tools based on a survey we did with our developers and some hard metrics we measured. The survey was heavily inspired by (and we compared ourselves to) the paper “A Large-Scale Survey on the Usability of AI Programming Assistants: Successes and Challenges” by Jenny T. Liang et al. from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, USA.
