The Maryland Japanese + English Language Community Pages

The MJELC Mission: We are a social community in the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area who facilitate a greater fluency in Japanese and English as second languages and share with others the beauty of Japanese and American culture.

The Conversation Partner Program is for anyone interested in Japanese or English as a second language. The idea of a Conversation Partner is for two people to work one-on-one for the purpose of language exchange. A small group may also work together all as Conversation Partners for the same objective.

Details about our Conversation Partner Program and our expectations for this program can be found by clicking here.

We are a community sharing events centralized around language exchange and cultural exchange. In other words, people who want to speak (or hear) Japanese or English may join. It is open to all skill levels. However, as it should be with any group you may discover through social media, the safety and the well-being of our members comes first. It is expected that everyone abide by the following basic guidelines:

IMPORTANT:

Before you join, for the safety of our members, we kindly ask you to provide us with a brief introduction about yourself and answer the questions you should receive when you request to join. If you leave the questions blank, your request to join will be declined.

No Soliciting!

Bearing in mind that our focus as a community lies in language exchange and cultural exchange, you may not solicit within your introduction or within any of the supplementary questions you will be asked during your request to join. Do not post any contact information about yourself, including your phone number or your e-mail address in your introduction or within any of the supplementary questions as our leadership qualifies this also as soliciting. Profiles with soliciting will be declined!

Per Meetup.com's rules, people under 18, being considered minors, are not able to join as members. However, if you are under 18, you may still join us as a guest of someone who is a member as long as that member accompanies you at all times.

1. The Core Rule of MJELC - Respect one another!

In short, this means that hazing and/or harassment will not be tolerated. In addition, please do not treat our community as a dating service. And finally, please make every effort to avoid sensitive topics like politics, religion, sex, racial/ethnic stereotypes, etc. Help to maintain a positive community atmosphere that is fun and healthy.

Details about The Core Rule of MJELC and also our Three Strikes Rule can be found by clicking here.

2. Be active!

We know it's difficult with how a person's daily life can make him or her busy, but please do your best to make an effort to join us for events.

Details about our Inactive Members Policy can be found by clicking here.

3. Keep a positive attitude, and let's have a really great time!

At the end of the day, we are a community that shares common goals and common interests in language exchange and cultural exchange. If we are not having fun, we have no community to share within our area and with the rest of the world.

Unlike a classroom setting, we meet in a casual environment such as a restaurant, a coffee house, or even online using Skype to network with our members in Japan. People then simply form natural conversations or practice groups.

We also feature a Conversation Partner Program where members may unofficially work either one-on-one or in a small group to practice language exchange. If you are looking for a conversation partner, our organizers will help to find you one.

Yes you may. You are always welcome to invite new guests to an event, or to refer them to meetup.com/mjelc to sign up.

Our schedule has a tendency to change frequently. The best advice is to keep an eye on the calendar to see what's new.

Yes. There is no cost to join us. If we meet at a restaurant, people pay individually at the end. Some venues such as a karaoke studio would have an equally shared cost. Otherwise, it is our expectation that we are never going to ask you for money.

However, donations to our community are always welcome. Donations will be used to compensate any members who host our occasional Cook + Social event and also the required subscription fee for this group to stay on Meetup which is $180 per year. To donate, you must be a member of our community. Details about how to donate are included in each of our event listings. If we receive very generous donations, special events may also include a free Dine + Social event or a trip paid in full.

In the event that MJELC becomes terminated, any surplus of donation funds will be donated to the Japanese Americans Care Fund in Annandale, VA - a non-profit organization that provides Japanese and Japanese Americans residing the B-W Metro area with the assistance and services they need.
