Great Lakes Traditional Arts Gathering

Details

Classes and workshops at GLTAG are about land and people, focused on discovering and learning traditional arts, skills, technologies, cultural traditions, natural history, science, and sustainability - with a special emphasis on the Great Lakes Region. The content of our workshops has spanned a broad range of topics and traditions from many cultural and ethnic backgrounds including craft traditions, woods lore, technologies, music, storytelling, foods, biology, archaeology, astronomy, and sustainable and eco-conscious practices.

Spend four days working directly with the regionʼs most noted traditional artists, craftspeople, historians and naturalists in small group settings - with dozens of workshops for both adults and children. Forge your own bark awl, help build a fully functional spruce bark canoe, etch a birch bark basket with an Odawa artist, work with a master falconer, explore the waters around Drummond island in a replica 1870s wooden ship, and take home an assortment of beautiful and functional traditional crafts and new skills. Evenings feature acoustic music, star gazing and traditional storytelling by campfire.
