THE FUTURE OF HEREDITARY AND VIRAL DISEASE CURES
Details
From 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM we discuss RANDOM BITS where anybody can bring information to the group that might be useful or important when considering the future. Then the presentation starts at 10 AM and lasts until noon. There is usually some time for discussion.
HOW GENE EDITING AND BIOLOGIC DRUGS CURE HEREDITARY DISEASE AND SHOW PROMISE FOR CURING VIRAL DISEASES LIKE AIDS
The mutated gene that causes the debilitating disease sickle cell anemia
in homozygous individuals (inherited from both parents) has been
conserved and spread in tropical populations because it confers
considerable immunity to malaria in heterozygous (inherited from one
parent) individuals.
Until recently the only treatment for this disease involved transplanted
bone marrow and the life long use of immunosuppressive drugs.
Thanks to gene editing we now have a cure, which will be described.
Other cures including the first for the HIV/AIDS virus seem on the
horizon -- and will be looked at as well.
