MicroRNA: What is it, and Why it Matters

Details
From 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM we discuss RANDOM BITS where anybody can bring information to the group that might be useful or important when considering the future. Then the presentation starts at 10 AM and lasts until noon. There is usually some time for discussion.
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, non-coding RNA molecules that regulate gene expression by binding to messenger RNA (mRNA) and either blocking protein production or causing the mRNA to be degraded. They are found in plants, animals, and some viruses and play crucial roles in development, cell growth, and differentiation. Dysregulation of miRNAs is linked to various diseases, including cancer, making them a focus for potential diagnostic and therapeutic applications.
