MNFuturists Presentation Future of Reproductive Medicine
Details
From 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM we discuss RANDOM BITS where anybody can bring information to the group that might be useful or important when considering the future. Then the presentation starts at 10 AM and lasts until noon. There is usually some time for discussion.
From the first 'test tube baby' in 1978 to today's 'chemical
pregnancies', 'morning after pills', and sperm and egg selling to help
infertile couples reproduce -- one thread has run through the
application of technology to human reproduction.
Conception is easy -- successful implantation is hard.
That first test tube baby took 282 test tube conceptions
before they achieved one successful implantation
(that could actually grow into a human).
And today, when a woman is trying to get pregnant, up to
53% of her fertilized eggs will fail to implant and become
a growing fetus.
This theme will follow us into a future of host mother surrogacy,
artificial uterine replicators, babies with two male parents and no
female parent, babies with two mothers and no father, babies born
decades after they were conceived, and all sorts of futuristic
innovations that will change our culture and our attitudes toward
reproduction. Babies are easy to start -- hard to bring to birth.
