From 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM we discuss RANDOM BITS where anybody can bring information to the group that might be useful or important when considering the future. This week we will have a short annual meeting, after which the presentation will last until about noon. There probably will be some time for discussion.

## Agentic AI Futures

Very short & longer defs. of Agentic AI by SuperGrok:

An AI agent is software you give a goal, not just a question. A chatbot answers and stops. An agent can plan steps, use tools (browser, files, email, code, calendars), check the result, and keep going until the job is done—or it asks you to approve.

Agentic AI is artificial intelligence that does not merely answer questions or generate content on command, but can pursue a goal over time: it plans a sequence of steps, chooses and uses tools, acts in software or the physical world, checks results, and revises its course when something fails. Unlike a chatbot that waits for the next prompt, an agent can be given an outcome—“reconcile these invoices,” “book the trip within these constraints,” “keep this experiment running”—and then decompose the work, call APIs, browse systems, write and run code, and hand off only the exceptions. That shift matters because most valuable work is not a single response but a chain of decisions under incomplete information. As models get better at planning, memory, and reliable tool use, agents can take on the coordination layer that currently consumes most skilled labor: research, operations, software maintenance, scientific workflows, customer resolution, and personal administration. The economic effect is not just faster typing; it is software that can own a process end to end, multiply the output of each person, and run continuously at a cost far below a human team—while also raising hard questions about oversight, error cascades, and who remains accountable when the system acts on its own.
