Erin Stellato

Topic:
Leveraging Execution Plans to Reduce Resource Use

Abstract:

Performance tuning is cool - who doesn't love making something that's slow go faster? But tuning is not just about duration, it's also about reducing resource use which not only makes a query go faster, but also creates more capacity on the server.

There are multiple facets to tuning, with execution plans front and center. If you want to understand why a query requires a lot of I/O or CPU, then you need to see what's happening inside the engine.

In this session we'll start with a quick review of where we can find execution plans, and then we'll look at them in detail. In addition to talking about operators, how they work, and what to watch out for, we'll also dive into the not-so-obvious information in a plan which can be extremely valuable when troubleshooting and tuning. Expect to leave this session with practical information about execution plans that you can put to use immediately.

Speaker:

Erin Stellato is a Data Platform MVP and lives in Cleveland, OH. She has over 20 years of technology experience and has worked with SQL Server since 2003. Her areas of interest include performance tuning, Extended Events, Query Store, and helping accidental/involuntary DBAs figure out how SQL Server works. Erin is an active member of the SQL Server community, helps with her local user group, and is a regular speaker at conferences including SQLintersection, SQLBits, and the PASS Summit. Outside of time with family and friends, she enjoys running, reading, movies, and all things chocolate.
