Presentation topics, abstracts, speaker bio for this meeting:
Speaker #1: Rick Heiges
Topic: What is Arc and Arc Enabled Data Services?
Abstract
In this session, we will explore what Arc is today and focus on Arc Enabled Data Services. Through this evolving technology, a customer can run a SQL Managed Instance and Hyperscale PostgreSQL anywhere they run Kubernetes. This means that if the customer runs Kubernetes on-prem or even a competitive public cloud (AWS or GCP), a SQL Managed Instance and Hyperscale PostgreSQL leverage those environments as its home.
Speaker Bio:
Rick Heiges is a Sr. Cloud Solution Architect in the Data & AI space at Microsoft. Data has been a focus of his career for more than 30 years as he helps customers solve business problems and take control and advantage of their data estate. Another passion of his is to help others through education to see the potential of the possible and is an active participant in the broader data community.
Speaker #2: Miloš Radivojević
Topic: Parameter Sniffing with SQL Server Stored Procedures
Level 300
Abstract:
“The procedure is very slow in the application, but it works perfectly when you run it in SSMS. Yesterday everything went well, but since this morning, we have a lot of timeouts. Everything works fine for the users from Department A, but Department B is always complaining... When you search for Customer Id, everything is ok, but when you use the date criterion, you have to wait 10 seconds for the answer; yesterday it was the other way around ...”
I'm sure that every developer familiar with SQL Server had to deal with such complaints. In this session, we will provide an explanation for this (sometimes very unpleasant) phenomenon - parameter sniffing. Of course, we will not only explain why and how it occurs, but also offer different solutions to this problem and discuss which solution is applicable in which scenario.
Speaker Bio:
Miloš Radivojević is Microsoft Data Platform MVP (x8) located in Vienna, Austria. He is Head of MSSQL Database Engineering at Entain. He is very active in the SQL Server community: he is co-founder of the SQL Pass Austria and speaks regularly at local and international database conferences. He is also co-author of three SQL Server books: Mastering SQL Server 2017, SQL Server 2017 Developer’s Guide and SQL Server 2016 Developer’s Guide.
