Making mobile apps more accessible

Details

We all want the apps we create to be inclusive and accessible. But much of the information out there, and most of the standards and guidelines, are focussed on websites rather than mobile apps. Many of us have had internal stakeholders or clients say to us, "Just make the app WCAG compliant" - but when you look at WCAG guidelines they look super webby.

We've brought together some speakers from different disciplines (Dev, Design, QA Analyst), who are all focused on creating accessible mobile apps. They will be sharing some core accessibility principles and practical tools and tricks they use.

The Meet-up will start with an hour of talks/questions, then if you want to stick around there will be more drinks, nibbles and time for connecting.

We’d love you to come join us, hopefully learn something useful, and meet some cool people. We’re a relaxed, friendly bunch - we are excited to start building a supportive mobile community in Wellington!

More detail on talks:

Charlotte Johnson (Principal Design Consultant, Alphero)
To create a more inclusive digital world we have to be designing accessible apps. This talk will help you understand what you need to consider to successfully design inclusive apps, and help you understand the support, guidelines and opportunities native operating systems provide us today that push accessibility beyond the basics.

Connor Moody (Senior Android and iOS Developer, Alphero)
Connor will talk about go-to tooling for debugging accessbility on iOS, and common accessibility issues and tricks for mobile.

Andrew Ritchie (QA Analyst, Alphero)
Andrew will be sharing our Quality Assurance team's journey to find tools that help with accessibility testing; their learnings on what accessibility categories can be tested by the tools; which areas should still be done manually; and how to process these results with other team members.
