With the Canadian government's recent signing of an open data treaty and re-launch of their open data portal, we thought now would be a great time to explore what open data is, how it can be used, and why it's going to change the future! Please join us tonight as we host a round table discussion around how we can use open data during this new and exciting time!

We'll be showcasing five Windows Store apps developed by People & Code, Sela Canada and LunarFrog Software, using open data provided by the City of Toronto. These include:

  • Toronto Public Library Locator

  • Toronto Events and Festivals App

  • DineSafe App

  • Bixi Station Locator

  • Green P Parking Lot Locator

We'll also be discussing how the data works and challenges involved with development and implementation. We also welcome members to share with the group how you used open data in your applications.

In this session, we'll learn more about:

  • Design elements and process

  • The challenges and opportunities with apps in the public services sector

  • Working with the Windows SDK

  • Considerations relating to user experience
