No Host: San Diego Book Crawl
Details
Alright, where's the true book lovers?!
This event is for where you get your workout and up your literary game all at the same time.
How It Works
The Passport: At your first stop, you can pick up an official Book Crawl Passport.
My first stop will be The Library Shop at the Central Library at 315 Park Blvd. If you want to meet me there at 11:30 AM. Let me know.
The Stamps: Every time you spend at least $10 at a participating bookstore, you receive a stamp in your passport.
The Prizes: As you collect stamps, you reach different reward tiers. While prizes can vary slightly each year, typical tiers include:
3 Stamps: An official Book Crawl sticker.
5 Stamps: A "Will Crawl for Books" patch.
8 Stamps: A specialty enamel pin (often designed by local artist Susie Ghahremani).
11+ Stamps: A limited-edition Book Crawl tote bag.
What to Expect
Varied Bookstore Personalities: You’ll encounter everything from the "subgenre nirvana" of Mysterious Galaxy (specializing in sci-fi, fantasy, and horror) to the queer-owned romance oasis Meet Cute in La Mesa, and the massive collection of gently-loved titles at Verbatim Books in North Park.
Special Events: Many stores host exclusive signings, author talks, and DIY activities. For instance, the Library Shop often hosts local authors, and the UC San Diego Bookstore has historically featured live music and zine-making stations.
Crowds and Community: Expect a festive atmosphere. You'll likely see fellow "crawlers" with their passports and tote bags. Since it's a popular event, some locations can get quite busy, especially on Saturday.
Participating Locations (Examples)
There are usually 14–15 participating shops, including:
Warwick’s (La Jolla)
The Book Catapult (South Park)
Libélula Books & Co (Barrio Logan)
La Playa Books (Point Loma)
Bay Books (Coronado)
Bluestocking Books (Hillcrest)
Tips for Crawlers
Plan Your Route: The stores are spread across the county. Many people tackle specific clusters (e.g., North Park/Hillcrest or coastal shops) to maximize their time.
Check Individual Hours: While most stores extend their hours for the crawl, they don't all open or close at the same time.
Bring a Tote: Even if you’re aiming for the prize tote, you’ll likely need a way to carry your finds from the first few stops.
Parking: Some areas like Hillcrest and North Park can have challenging parking, so consider carpooling or using public transit where possible.
