Try this 5.5-mile loop trail near Sandia Park, New Mexico. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 1 h 59 min to complete. This trail is great for birding, hiking, and mountain biking, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash. The main trail is under 3 miles (loop) but there are many other trails that go along the edge of the canyon or into the canyon. Much of the trail is among the Pinon and Juniper forest but there are other types of vegetation, especially in the canyons. There are nice views of the Sandias and surrounding area and there are some areas of nice volcanic features like a small cave and some nice canyon features.
This is a relatively easy hike with very little Elevation gain. I've always wanted to check out this area so consider it exploratory... the wild flowers should be in full bloom. this will most likely be our last low Elevation hike before we head to the mountains. (and we switch to Sundays for awhile because I will be taking Spanish on Thursday mornings).
Bring poles if you need them. Plenty of water. hat. sunscreen. snacks, good hiking boots/shoes..dress in layers. it may get hot before we finish.
Approximately 58 minute drive. bring $3-$5 to give your driver. we will carpool.
