The Cuesta Colorado Trail leads from the top of Chino Mesa to the Rio Grande. This rugged moderately difficult trail offers spectacular canyon views as it drops into a side canyon with amazing geologic formations. The canyon was formed by a maar which is caused by the contact of groundwater and magma.

The trail down is steep and rocky in places so sturdy boots and trekking poles are recommended. The trail ends at an arroyo which runs from the side canyon to the Rio Grande We will hike up the side canyon until it becomes impassible and then head down to the river. The total elevation change is almost 1000 feet with a hiking distance of about 3.5 miles.

Getting to the trail head requires a 4wd high clearance vehicle. We have two vehicles and will need a third to accommodate 12 people. Please let me know if you have such a vehicle.

Check the weather forecast and bring appropriate gear.
Please offer your driver $3. We will be hiking at a slow pace to avoid injuries. Route type: in and out. You can call me at 505-699-2546 if you're running late. I would like to leave at 8:00.
