Old Timers Canyon - San Pedro Mountains

The San Pedro Mountains are located south of Santa Fe near the town of Golden. Very few people have hiked these mountains as public access is restricted to a small area. This hike will be less than 4.5 miles with 700 feet of elevation change. Hiking will be on old mining roads. We will have to climb a steep rocky road to a saddle and then descend a steep rocky road into the canyon. Trekking poles are recommended.

We will have good views of the Ortiz, Sandia, and Jemez mountains including Cabezon.

This historic area was one of the first mining districts in the west. We will see a large old mill used for processing gold and silver ore and other structures. From the mine dumps one can find garnets, pyrite, and green crystals of epidote.

Any type of vehicle can make it to the parking area.
