Cerrillos Hills has a lot more to offer than just the State Park trails. Join me on a hike to an area that few have hiked which holds a mining camp, leftovers of mining operations, and a mine known for its rich silver ores. Thiis area is far away from the beaten path and offers spectacular scenery.

We will be hiking on rocky slopes, up arroyos, and of course, mining trails. This hike is 7 miles, 800 feet of elevation gain, and lots of beautiful views. This area of the Hills has some of the most majestic mountains in the area. We will be hiking up to a pass on a mining trail which we will take slow.

The mines in this area of the Cerrillos Mining District contain some of the most productive silver mines in the district which date back to 1879. After we visit the ruins of a mining camp, and wander around the mining operations, we will head over into another area where we will have lunch at an abandoned silver mine and look for minerals.

I was there yesterday and collected some good samples of rich silver ore, so bring your rock hammer if you have one. Even if you're not into mines and minerals, this area has awesome scenery.

Bring trekking poles and good boots as cactus is everywhere. If you are going to handle minerals, bring gloves or something to wash your hands.

Hazards include open mine shafts and unstable structures that we will stay away from. There is no collection of artifacts, this is an historic site.

Due to the ongoing problem of people not showing up for hikes, priority will be given to those that I have hiked with and show up.

Getting to the parking area requires 4wd high clearance vehicles. Everyone will be placed on the waiting list so I can select those with the required vehicle. Please provide your driver $3.

This is an out and back hike.
