Sulphur Springs and Alamo Canyon
Distance: 6 miles
Elevation change: 600 feet
Elevation range: 8100 - 8700
Hiking on abandoned road

Sulphur Springs is like no other area in New Mexico; it has features that you can only see in places like Yellowstone: hot bubbling mud-pots and fumaroles spewing rotten egg smelling gas.

There was a short-lived Sulphur mine here from the early 1900s and then a health spa/hotel were in operation until 1970. We will see a number of old buildings and abandoned vehicles plus some bazaar landscape before we hike up the valley to Alamo Canyon, which is a beautiful scene of meadows, streams and ponds. If we are lucky, we will catch the peak dandelion bloom.

Everyone will be on a waitlist and those who have been active in the group will be given priority. First time hikers are welcomed if spaces are available.

Please be considerate of your fellow hikers on the waitlist, if you can’t go sign off at least 24 hours before the hike.

A high clearance vehicle may be handy. My last hike here was ages ago so this will be an exploratory adventure.

Please provide your driver $8.
