Full Stack Monitoring & Alerting

Abstract:

How do you build a monitoring and alerting framework for your whole stack? At Squarespace, we use technologies such as MongoDB, Couchbase, RabbitMQ, Elasticsearch and Dropwizard in our backend. Furthermore, we operate our own data centers with F5 load balancers, Isilon storage clusters, VMware ESX servers, and (lately) Mesos clusters with Marathon and Docker containers.

We've set ourselves the goal of being able to centralize the monitoring and alerting of all of these moving parts in our infrastructure. We'd like to share our experience building a scalable solution using Graphite, Grafana, Collectd, Nagios, Logstash, Elasticsearch and Kibana, among others.
