Pelton Pond, Fahnestock State Park
Cold Spring, Hudson Valley, New York, NY, USThis approximately 8-mile hike is one of the best in Clarence Fahnestock State Park, NY. It is especially nice during the fall as the leaves change colors. Elevation gain is around 1,033ft.
The hike starts at the Pelton Pond parking lot a short drive right off of Route 301. After a short walk around the pond and a walk along the road, we'll reach the start of the Three Lakes trailhead.
Expect a varied landscape on this route, combining the Three Lakes Trail with a section of the iconic Appalachian Trail. You'll wander through fern-lined forests, encounter stream crossings, and enjoy tranquil waters. The Appalachian Trail portion includes climbing a ridge to an unnamed lake, offering a more challenging experience with rocky stretches and dense woodlands.
Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park is a delight for outdoor enthusiasts. This 15,000-acre park, covering land in Putnam and Dutchess counties, boasts hiking trails, picnic areas, a scenic campground, and abundant opportunities for boating, hunting, fishing, and birding. The park is also home to the Taconic Outdoor Education Center, which provides high-quality environmental programming and Fahnestock Winter Park, which includes 20 kilometers of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
