Image a rolling, forested journey through 1,000+ acres of East Wallingford, where the Muddy River cuts through a mosaic of hardwoods, open fields, and wetland swamps. This approximately 6.5‑mile hike blends mixed deciduous forests of beech, oak, and maple with hemlock‑lined swamp walks, ridge‑top ridge walks, and open meadows.

Trail conditions vary from smooth, well‑blazed paths to sections with light mud, especially near the river. The route guides you through wooded sections, agricultural fields, and shaded hemlock groves. Spring brings wildflowers in bloom, while fall offers rich foliage along the ridge.

Elevation is moderate, with a total gain of about 690 feet on the chosen route, offering valley views from Moss Rock and a sweeping perspective of the surrounding landscape, including glimpses of the New Haven skyline. This hike will start at the large parking area at the Woodhouse Avenue soccer field (Carini Field).

Scenery highlights include:

  • Ridge walks with panoramic valley views
  • Swamp walks in the shade of hemlocks
  • Open fields with rolling hills and traprock ridges
  • Wildlife and bird habitats in forest and wetland zones

Experience notes: The trail is popular with hikers and bikers. It’s generally not crowded, with good conditions most of the year, though some sections can be muddy in wet weather. The preserve is part of a larger 1500‑acre network.
This 6.5‑mile loop is ideal for those seeking a mix of forest immersion, open space, and a scenic overlook, with enough variety to keep the pace engaging without being overly strenuous.
Rated B+ for difficulty and distance. Hopefully, the hike should just take an average of 3 hours to complete. No pets allowed.
