Hacktoberfest 2022 x Monstarlab Prague

Details

It's Hacktoberfest! Let's celebrate open source (OS) over food, learning, and great company!

We’ll talk about what is OS and how you can contribute to open source projects. This is a great event for all levels - whether you are a beginner and want to get introduced to OS, or an OS contributor that is already involved in projects.

Agenda

17:30 - Welcome, snacks, and networking

18:00 - Open Source - Khairullo Abdulaev (Monstarlab)
Every day the popularity of open source is becoming more and more, both among developers and among businesses. And you will almost never see a project without the participation of open source. So let's see what this popularity is so connected with and should we open source?

18:15 - Building one more CSS-in-JS - Oleksandr Fediashov (Microsoft)
Griffel is CSS-in-JS behind Fluent UI React v9. The talk will cover the story behind to explain why one more CSS-in-JS is needed, differences to existing solutions including Ahead-of-Time compilation & issues related to implementation.

18:45 - MLOps rocket for Google Cloud - João Da Silva (Avast), Michal Mrazek (Avast)
Taking ML projects from research all the way to production can be a doubting and lengthy process. Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) provides mechanisms and strategies that simplify and guide this process.
In this presentation we will present wanna-ml a new framework that focuses on standardizing and automating MLOps on Google Cloud.

19:15 - Break

19:30 - Build your career full of impactful stories - Martin Venyš (Česko.Digital)
When selling yourself in the crowded developers market, it's not only about programming skills. Telling a story about the projects you contributed to, the impact you had on society, education or the planet helps you convince the CEO of your dream company that you're the best pick for that tech lead role.
I want to tell you stories of my volunteer work at NGOs that helped me in my career from developer to CTO and how expert volunteering organizations, like Česko.Digital, can help you write yours.

20:00 - State of open source security - Fridolín Pokorný (Datadog)
Open source helped to shape the world. Do you want to run your favorite machine-learning library for experiments? You can just install it from the Internet. Do you want to containerize your application? You can use the open source tooling for containerizing applications. Do you want to run a cluster? You can download a world-class cluster orchestrator. However, with great power comes great responsibility. What are the security implications of running this software? Let's have a look at the current state of open source security and how the open source community approaches this problem.

20:30 - How we created a development environment for the YARA language - Matej Kašťák (Avast)
In this presentation, we will share a journey of how we created a development environment for a security-oriented language called YARA nearly from scratch. We will briefly introduce Language Server Protocol (LSP), the core technology for implementing our YARA Language Server (YLS), which can provide code completion, formatting, linting, etc. The second part will cover how we implemented a YARA debugger in Rust using FFI (Foreign Function Interface) with the YARA engine.

What's Hacktoberfest?

Hacktoberfest is DigitalOcean's annual event that encourages people to contribute to open source throughout October. Much of modern tech infrastructure—including some of DigitalOcean's own products—relies on open-source projects built and maintained by passionate people who often don’t have the staff or budgets to do much more than keep the project alive. Hacktoberfest is all about giving back to those projects, sharpening skills, and celebrating all things open source, especially the people that make open source so special.

Do I get a prize for participating?

The first 40,000 participants (maintainers and contributors) who complete Hacktoberfest can elect to receive one of two prizes: a tree planted in their name, or the Hacktoberfest 2022 t-shirt. Check more details in: https://hacktoberfest.com/participation/

IMPORTANT!

If you're planning to come, please register for the event so we can provide your name to the reception for allowing you in on the event day.

Thanks!
