In this on line class, author Evan Pritchard will retell the Mi’kmaq version of the Thunderbird story, tying it in with other ash tales involving ashes of penance—katabasis (Greek), and Ash Wednesday (Old Testament) plus ashes of humility as in Ashput/Cinderella. These teachings are about clearing the slate and forgiveness. But other ash stories are about renewal, including the Thunderbird, Little Brother Lassoes the Sun,using ashes from a sacred fire for protection, and the story of Tchi-Koss, the plant that “burns to ashes.” He will share a series of traditional tales regarding the defeat of winter in various forms, and much more.
