HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW
(1982, U.S.A., 91 min., 35mm) Mark Rosman
In this cult classic of the slasher genre, seven sorority sisters are hunted down by a mysterious killer after a prank on their house mother accidentally turns fatal. The dark side of college life is in full display as proprietary makes way for violence in this morality tale. And in a twist on the horror genre, women become actors and perpetrators as opposed to merely sacrificial lambs.
Partially inspired by Henri-Georges Clouzot's “Les Diaboliques,” writer-director Mark Rosman set out to make a truly independent film that epitomizes horror films of the 1980s. Sexual repression, bodily autonomy, and institutional failures are all featured prominently, but the film’s young female cast and sorority house setting lend it a deeper tragic undercurrent… The tragedy of wasting a life right as it’s about to start. To be preceded by Horror trailers from the era, all projected on knife-sharp 35mm! (from the Mitch Davis collection)
