Emi Baylor @ McGill University / AI4Good Alumnus
"Detecting Climate Change Misinformation in the Media"
Abstract: The presence of climate skepticism in the mainstream media has been found to contribute to public disengagement from the issue. To address this, we aim to develop a fact-checking tool to help users distinguish climate truths from falsities in the media and keep them attuned to the climate crisis. As an initial step, we used different Natural Language Processing (NLP) approaches to classify media coverage of climate change into left and right-leaning articles. These techniques demonstrate an ability to distinguish between differing points of view on the topic of climate change.

Jazlyn Hellman, Student @ McGill University
"A Personal Pain App - Why Diversity Brings Solutions"
Abstract: In this presentation, we will share our experiences as participants in the AI4Good 2019 Lab, during which we developed AI.D - an intelligent and personalized chronic pain management aid. We will bring you along on our ideation journey, discuss some specificities of our pain prediction model, and why we chose to leverage AI for this task.

Golnoosh Farnadi, Postdoc fellow @ Mila / Université de Montréal
"Deep Individual Fairness Verification"
Abstract: AI and machine learning have become essential components in various automated tools that drive the modern society, e.g., education, hiring, credit approval, and policing. Using AI tools in applications that affect on people's live raise concerns about biases of such systems towards individuals and algorithmic discrimination. It also has motivated the development of fairness-aware machine learning. Due to the success of deep learning approaches in recent years and their popularity in various domains, recently a few works started to research on formal verification of neural network models. In this talk, we focus on a fairness verification approach for deep neural networks.
