Details

Dear all,

This a reminder that we will meet for the 3rd session of "Søren Kierkegaard - Subjectivity, Irony and the Crisis of Modernity." Some of you did not receive note that we are meeting for the 2nd session last week, despite my having emailed the group via meet-up. So will try to inform everyone via scheduling an event

To recap from last session, we briefly touched on the following related topics: Socrates' mission as the gadfly of Athens, the daimon of Socrates, the concept of maieutics (i.e. moving from particulars to universals in a dialogue), Aporia, Socratic Irony, and Kierkegaard's attempt to search for truth for himself. We also had a discussion on the follow questions: can society exist if we relativize everything; Socrates approach was purely negative, i.e. he was deconstructing everyone's beliefs - is there a way that we can deconstruct the Socratic approach itself; overall, is the Socratic task beneficial or harmful to society?

Today, we'll cover the following topics: modern notion of autonomy, Hegel & Kierkegaard's agreement on Socrates as having ushered in a "mental turning point" in history of philosophy, the positive and negative task of philosophy, and Socrates' charge of atheism.

A lot to cover! But don't worry, you don't have to be a specialist to take part. And you will of course leave with a better understanding of Kierkegaard and his role in helping us understand the modern world.

See you later!

Elyas
