Details

About The Performance:
Presented by the Houston Jazz Festival.

Ellington led his band from 1923 until his death in 1974 at the age of 75. But even after his death the band played on. The Duke Ellington Orchestra has been performing worldwide for the past 100 years without a break. It's the oldest continuously performing jazz orchestra in history.

Gathering Place:
We will meet near the picnic tables by the concession stand, on the side closer to the stage door. At 7:00pm I go to the hill and set up. If you can't make it at 7:00, we'll hold some space. Look for our location in the comments. The concert starts at 8:00.

The hill is divided with the left side allowing chairs and the right reserved for blankets. We sit on the chair side.

WHAT TO BRING:
Chair or blanket. Blankets may have the view obstructed by chairs.
Drinks and snacks. Adult beverages are allowed. The city prohibits glass containers in the park. (We don't check and the city never has objected to discreet wine bottles.) It's always more fun when people bring snacks to share.

Parking:
There are two main parking areas for Miller.
The Zoo lot has more spaces
Parking Lot F at Hermann Park
The Centennial Gardens Lot has easier exits after the show
Parking Lot C

More about the performance:
Miller Theatre Website
Beginning in 1923 and for more than fifty years Duke led his Orchestra in over 20,000 concerts and on multiple world tours while also composing an inexhaustible songbook, writing movie scores, composing stage musicals and being one of America’s greatest cultural ambassadors.

Today, the Orchestra’s Music Director is Charlie Young, a graduate of North Texas State, who played in the Orchestra during Mercer’s leadership and performed alongside many of the members from Duke’s time. The musicians of today’s Duke Ellington Orchestra take great pride in knowing the legacy of each of the players who sat in their chair before them and knowing the standards they must strive to uphold.
