Blueberry Picking Event

Details

You-pick Blueberries, one hour from downtown. This is now an event.

This Event may reschedule depending on the rain, weather etc.... Check here for the condition of the Blueberry crop.

Because a number of people have shown interest in picking blueberries this summer I am setting something up. We will gather by the entrance of the berry patch at 9:00 and then disperse into the fields to pick. I will get in line to pay at around 10:45 and must leave by 11:00 but you are encouraged to stay as long as you like.

Wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. The heat in Texas is always a concern so let someone know if you are having a hard time. For more information about hiking check out this very useful hiking website: HATS and More site

A word about the Texas Blueberry: While those of you from the North have your superlatives of Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox, you will have to stand in awe of the great Texas Blueberry: developed in the 1970s at Texas A&M to withstand the heat down here, the Texas Blueberry stands 12 feet high with fruit sweeter than can be measured. The best way to pick them is to find a good bush and go inside although the management asks that you not climb higher than you are willing to fall. You can't believe everything you hear, but my cousin's friend said that he heard about blueberries the size of tennis balls. Plausible? Maybe, but I don't believe the stories about watermelon sized fruit used to feed NASA-astronaut Bears on a secret mission to terraform Mars. You just have to exercise a bit of careful skepticism or people will just roll their eyes.

Our organizers are not guides nor do we have any special training. We are here to come up with hiking ideas and get the hike started. Take the same precautions you would if going alone, including the fitness needed to be in the sun for a while. Then enjoy the morning among friends.

COVID PRECAUTIONS:
Bring and wear a mask when not hiking and follow the best practices to prevent the transmission of COVID.

Gathering Place:
In front of the entrance to the Berry patch.

Parking: Lots of parking options along the sandy roads leading up to the berry patch.

Weather Forecast:

Optional After Hike:

This is now an event. I recommend it to anyone but there are a lot of unpredictable things that make berry picking hard to schedule as a normal group outing. Everyone spreads out across the 20 acre area and have their fill of picking in the heat at different times so this is necessarily an open ended event. That said, I will be leaving at 11:00 for another event and I hope you all have a great time. Alan
